Although Google maintains that there is no help of meta description in the rankings there has been anecdotal evidence that indirectly attributes that there is some help with descriptions.
Generally, Google prefers a meta description between 155–160 characters.
Therefore, when you are optimizing the meta-description, you will be improving:

- Perception over the resulting quality.
